Leading through common grounds
As editor, I choose to lead through understanding. This lead to my advisor and I creating Common Grounds. At the beginning of the school year, the staff built goals and standards together creating mutual ‘common grounds’ to always go back to, allowing the editors and staff to understand each other.
Organizing fun events for bonding
I have always found that as journalists, competition is a great way to bond. For our paper layout nights, I designated myself to provide themes. As an extra bonding experience, some themes are competitive, encouraging healthy competition, and showing staff that kind-spirited competing is a great way to learn.
Support through stress relief
High School is stressful, not to mention newspaper as well. Helping relieve stress creates a comfortable environment with a close staff. For editors, I bought us all fidget spinners to help with the stress of leading, and I also made hot chocolate for some of our staff during a final.
Connecting through social media
Social Media provides a platform for staff to connect and feel apart of a welcoming community. This year I created and run social media just for our staff for those reasons. Most posts tend to feature Tripod the dog, our unofficial mascot.
